Kansas City Brat (aka: Bratwurst)
Today I had the most unexpected & amazing Brat at the Kansas City Royals' Game. We were lucky to be sitting in seats that were cushioned and where a server comes by to get your order. We ordered a Brat to split. It came topped with sauerkraut, peppers and onions. I expected typical stale bun, dried out brat. It was juicy, soft bun and balanced by such an interesting combination of red and yellow peppers and sauerkraut that was not too tangy. Everything about it was just right. It was so amazing, we ordered another one to split!!! Way to go Royals!

Kansas City Barbecue
Lamb ribs at Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue are the most melt-in-your-mouth carnivorous experience! I like to slather them with their extra hot sauce and wash them down with a Kansas City home brewed Boulevard Pale Ale. So I can eat every last bite I skip the delicious cheesy corn, beans and cole slaw and go for the vegetable kebob, a char grilled skewer of zucchini, corn on the cob, onions, green peppers and giant mushrooms with ranch dipping sauce. Oh my gosh I'm drooling on my computer keys!

Owens 501 Diner
The food here is excellent, and the atmosphere combines the feel of a hometown diner with gourmet tastes. One of my favorites items on the menu is the Corn Flake French Toast - not soggy in the middle and plenty of crunch from the corn flakes to add an extra element. Fresh strawberries decorate the plate for an exciting burst of flavor. Not in the mood for breakfast? They make a delicious Teriyaki burger, or you can opt for the classic. Overall, a top pick in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Best Pizza - Hands Down
American Flatbread Burlington Hearth in Burlington, Vermont (and Waitsfield) has the best wood-fired pizza and brewery hands down. You can't make a reservation but we have waited up to an hour - WITH KIDS - just because we feel it's worth the wait. And the best part about waiting is the on-site-brewed beer you can sip. Locally-grown toppings (cheeses, meats, vegetables - it's all Vermont and GOOD), fabulous mixtures of flavors. Earthy, warm, the crust alone can make you happy.

PIzza & Chocolate
++++ PIZZA ++++ The Lynwood Café in Randolph, MA: Not sure why it’s called a café because it is actually a bar that serves only pizza. No salads, subs anything fried, just the most amazing “pub pizza” on the planet. I drive an hour and 45 minutes at least once a month just for this thin-crust deliciousness on a pan. It has the perfect combination of cheese, sauce and crust. It doesn’t need any toppings (they ruin the perfect pizza flavor). Both the pizza and the atmosphere have been the same since 1949 (so I’ve been told), not even the décor has changed and it is still cash only. It’s definitely a hole-in-the-wall pizza joint, but all that just disappears when you take your first bite. I’d be willing to put this pizza up against any other pizza in the country. I’m drooling just thinking about it! ++++++ CHOCOLATE +++++ Burdick Chocolate in Walpole, NH, Cambridge MA and New York, NY: Their confections have completely changed the way I see chocolate. Their chocolate is not only the smoothest, most decadent and delicious chocolate in the world, but its beautiful artisanal chocolate made by hand. It has completely ruined my love of regular commercial chocolate, which is fine with me! It is definitely chocolate to be tasted, not devoured and can brighten the rainiest of days!

Continental Cafe - Fitchburg, Wisconsin
Continental Café in Fitchburg. First of all, I think they are the only authentic Italian restaurant in Madison. Owned and operated by an original Sicilian. Now, the dish that cannot be beat is their Breaded Sicilian Sirloin Steak, you can get a Breaded Tenderloin too, but the Sirloin is a little less expensive. It is a generous cut of meat that is browned on the stove, breaded and baked to the perfect temperature every time. I like medium and it has always been perfect. They serve it with two little cups of sauce; marinara and garlic, both to die for, although I like the steak plain with the breading. And that’s not all. They include sliced tomatoes and mozzarella cheese on the side with some Basil leaves. And that’s not all either, their Italian hot bread is on the side with Virgin Olive Oil, a little Balsamic and shredded Parmesan. Mama mia, that’s a meal. For that person that eats on the light side they have little side dishes i.e.. Pasta, potatoes and my favorite, their Caesar salad. They have all these dishes as a full order but what’s unique is they offer small dishes for $3. Not too much, just a taste to satisfy the desire. We shouldn’t forget the great wine selection and their Martini’s are shaken perfect, with the shaved ice floating on top, tasting like water that leaves you wanting another one. Yes, it’s a favorite. I think I’ll go again tonight...stan reed - RS+K PS the desserts are a treat my stomach has only tasted on rare occasions. I’m always too full but I have had the pleasure of a bite or two.

| Sushi Den - best Jalapeno Hamachi sashimi appetizer - I dream about it and start to salivate just thinking about the ponzu sauce. +++++++ Steuben's - best "old school" cocktails, in particular: The Bee's Knees III. This gorgeous drink is made with Manuka Honey Vodka -- the nectar of the gods, concocted in New Zealand of course. Served straight up, pink and frothy after a good shaking by a very-tattooed bartender and garnished with a single, floating mint leaf. | The best grilled cheese, ever |
| Just so everyone knows, Cleveland has the best grilled cheese, ever made, for sure. There is a little restaurant (Melt, Bar and Grilled) in Cleveland, OH (Lakewood actually) that has by far the best grilled cheeses. This place is loved so much, in fact, people get tattoos of their logo and sandwiches. If ever in Cleveland this is place to go. Just to note, be prepared to wait no less than an hour to be seated, no matter what time of day. Seriously the best grilled cheese, and no one else in the country can say that. | The Heartland Cafe - Breakfast Burrito |
| The Dish: The breakfast burrito My favorite place to get the world's most delicious Breakfast Burrito is The Heartland Cafe in Rogers Park....there's at least 10 ingredients wrapped in a toasty tortilla and I think they put magic avocado in it! It's huge, it's delicious, and comes with a side of activism and democracy. The Heartland is known for their owner-activists who've run the place for over 20+ years. Sam (also a filmmaker) and Joe (also a musician-percussionist) are my favorite servers. | Chicago Mom & Pop Restaurants |
One thing Chicago does better than any other city that I can think of in the US is the small chain or Mom & Pop’s places for “fast food.” They consistently serve up fresh & tasty breakfasts, lunches and dinners, as well as midnight saganaki snacks. Where else in the country can you get a flaming, Metaxa-soaked cheese appetizer after a night of pub crawling? In other cities you’d settle for a White Castle. When it comes to hidden ethnic gems like Mr. Taco (amazing cheese quesadillas!) and the Riverside (traditional Bohemian dishes under $10) Chicago has no equal. Mangia, mangia! Lillian Polz

Nana Grace's Mudica Steaks
One enduring culinary tradition within Gloucester's Italian community is Mudica Conzata, or Italian seasoned breadcrumbs. These crumbs are used in many traditional dishes but one dish in particular is Mudica steaks. The thin steaks are coated in seasoned flour, an egg wash, covered in breadcrumbs and then deep-fried. There is nothing like a Mudica Steak Sandwich! This recipe and many more have been passed down in my family for generations. This is family favorite and I assure you one of those culinary tradtions that will be around for many more years to come. Mangia!
